Discovering the Beastie Boys #RIP MCA

I probably first saw the beastie boys on tv when i was kid. I mean i was super duper young but i remember seeing the sabotage video play endless on MTV when they were still playing videos. I thought to myself, these are kind of silly, why does this guy have a fake mustache. I was probably 8 or 9 years old i actually don’t remember. Either way, i knew i liked it. Personally the Beasties were never my favorite - ad rock and and mike d voices personally used to sound too whiny to me especially on Hello Nasty which is initially where i started my journey through the beasties catalog. The older i got the less annoying it became to me, probably because i identified with acting out and sorta the whole scream punk rock shit. Anyway when that came out i remember seeing it at tower records, unbeknownst at the time that it was the same white rap group from brooklyn that was in that Spike Jonze video - Partially because i was into maybe about 3 artists at the time, and i didn’t really wanted to hear anything besides RHCP, Marilyn Manson, and Wu Tang. Intergalactic happened and i bought the 12” and would try to beat juggle it to no days end on my belt drive gemini’s. I then inadvertently dove deeper later on after a friend left Check Your Head on cd at my house by accident. So my exploration of the beasties sort of happened backwards. I stumbled upon songs like “So Whatcha Want” and “Pass the Mic.” Thats when i became an MCA fan. Raw, raspy, through the megaphone sorta sound. Mix master mike as their dj was also a huge thing to me, his scratching on all of their records made me want to be a scratch dj. i was fan after that. That led to me to “To The 5 Boroughs” Check it out became one of my instant favorites to play when djing to this day. Then to Ill Communication, Paul’s Boutique, License to Ill which i coincidently bought at The WiZ in Union Square. When i was djing parties in syracuse two girls got in a fight and fell pretty much on top of the turntables spilled their beers all over the place and on my copy of the License to Ill LP. I pulled it out the other day and it still skips on fight for your right. The irony. Too many classic joints to name off those albums No sleep til BK - Brass Monkey, Girls, Rhymin and Stealin’ etc. Anyway it totally sucks that MCA passed away, its crazy to see someone in pop culture or hiphop for that matter that you think of as so young and energetic not being here. Hope my little stories inspire you to listen to and discover these legends. RIP MCA. Yes Yes Y’all.

#CollegeDropoutsTour

Me and my partner in crime Kirillwashere set out to find the 10 best college parties in America to come crash for free. We ran a contest and tons of colleges enered their legendary parties and finally, the students have spoken. Here’s the lineup. We just hit kansas state and i never thought i’d say this but, it feels great to be back at school! Check us on campus at schools across the country in the coming months.

Jesse Marco x Young+Reckless Present: Club Sandwich

I just finished this mixtape thats sort of a collection of my own edits and tracks that i’ve been working on and playing out. Huge electronic influences on this tape but i made sure to keep the turntables intact and you will definitely hear it in the intro (wicky wicky). I’ll be releasing the individual edits for dj’s when my facebook page hits 5000 likes so head over to my page HERE to download the tape! Check the tracklist below. Big thanks to Young and Reckless, needless to say there will be far more awesome collabs between us in the future.

Vice x Warner Bros x Greenhat Films Present…

I’m so excited to announce that on Feb 10th I’ll be going on a 10 date college tour with Machine Gun Kelly brought to you by Vice Magazine and Warner Bro’s for the release of their new movie Project X, which i coincidently play the dj in. Expect lots of raging, throwing up, chugging of beer, streamers, driving cars into pools, loud music, flame throwers etc But most of all, if you want to come party with us in your town - click HERE  to RSVP in your city. Blessings and see you at the party.

Billboard Magazine

So this is pretty awesome for our culture. There are three guys on the cover of billboard that either dj , produce, live produce, fuck shit up, however you want to categorize it from the stand point of someone who actually understands what they are doing on stage. As a fan of music in general and my fellow dj, its quite interesting Billboard is dropping the terms “dj” and “electronic music” together so often. Are they blurring the lines between the meaning? Either way they’re all phenomenal at what they do, whether its scratching , juggling, dubstepping, tribal housing their way through rocking the party, making new dance records, and its a most definitely a paradigm shifter for our culture for these guys to be on the cover. Only thing i wonder is if AM would be up there too if he was still here (in my opinion the answer is yes duh), and how he would be reacting to all the mainstream re-definitions of our cultures terms (i’d bet he’d let em know the real deal holyfield but in a nice way). Either way, whether your proud that you got 2 copies of boogie down productions first 12” and you can rock em to death, or you playing your own jams to a room full of believers, i’m psyched to be making music and djing in this day-n-age bc its fun as hell keep on keepin on, ya dig? lambchops!

“Daddy Cool” Single Art, Thisis50.com Interview

Hope everyone is real bundled up on the east coast and up in the mountains its starting to get freezing! We out in sundance about to do our Funday party at Tao tonight, last night Kaskade did his thing, honestly i wasn’t at all impressed by his dj set he basically played each song for 5 minutes and mixed into the next but he’s a skilled producer and music maker so i can see where most of his following comes from. All you guys on the west have it easy though, we have this thing called seasons on the east coast but nevermind that i’m not complaining. Just want to share the Big Beat designed cover for Daddy Cool with you to see what you thought? That and i did this little interview with a small website called thisis50.com with the big bro Jack Thriller. That guy had me laughing my ass off, he tried to get me to air out my dirty laundry but they kept it clean and to the point and we spoke a bit about Project X coming out in March, djing, music making and the big homie AM. Check it out below.
